Clifton 4th Beach is one of South Africa’s most popular beaches. It is one of a series of small protected coves, and is on the Atlantic Ocean side of Cape Town, near Camps Bay. Lifeguards are on duty during the Blue Flag season (December to the end of March). Parking is limited and unfortunately there is no disability access to the beach.
Founded in 1956 Clifton is one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in South Africa. Originally located on 1st beach the club relocated to its current location on 4th beach in the late 1970’s. The club has a rich history of drowning prevention, community engagement and competing in lifesaving sports.

Clifton is a residential area nestled on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and best known for its enclaved beaches which are protected from the notorious South Easter wind. The cluster of four beaches is accessed via narrow, steep stairs that run from the top of Victoria Road, through the residential structures and onto the various beaches. It is known for its chilly waters – First Beach is popular for watersports especially surfing, Second beach is often frequented by those enjoying volleyball. Third beach is the smallest and is popular among the local LGBTQ community while Fourth beach is the most popular for attracting beach goers who want to laze around and soak up the rays. Yachts also usually anchor off Fourth beach during the summer season when sunsets are as late as 8.30pm. In addition, Clifton’s 4th beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag status in recognition of its safety and tourist standards. Another attraction on bordering Camps Bay is Maidens Cove which has two tidal pools and designated braai facilities so is very popular for group gatherings over weekends and holidays
